Official Welcome by Senator Hyacinth Bennett
Inaugural Commitment/Swearing-In Ceremony for JFLL Volunteers

Tuesday June 23, 2009

COURTESIES & PROTOCOL

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning, it is an honour to welcome you all to this most auspicious occasion, the inaugural commitment ceremony for the National Volunteer Corps for Lifelong Learning.

On this International Public Service Day, I hardly think it is an exaggeration to suggest that the story of JFLL’s volunteers in lifelong learning and adult education has INDEED been one of unwavering devotion and steadfast commitment to the business of education in this country.

No doubt, it is out of deep reserves of loyalty to the cause of education and possibly against a number of odds that our JFLL volunteers have served over the years.

In fact, I believe that our JFLL volunteers can proudly and confidently claim an unmistakable sense of a history of solid contribution to the field of education which is the very lynchpin in the development of our nation.

Therefore, while we acknowledge and applaud this most valuable spirit of volunteerism, I am pleased to announce that it is the decision of the Board of the JFLL to do the utmost to facilitate the work of the JFLL across the length and breadth of Jamaica. In this regard, the Board of Directors has delegated Mr. Edward Shakes, the Executive Director to commence without delay:

  1. A carefully designed upgrading training programme for all JFLL teachers
  2. In addition, all JFLL centres will be equipped with at least the basic amenities, computers, electric fans, resource centres and so on
  3. Very importantly, our visits to the JFLL centres across the island will continue.

Ladies and gentlemen, we recognize that quality education fir JFLL students is inextricably linked to quality teachers and a quality learning environment in each of our centres.

To this end, the Board of Directors of JFLL is fully committed to and supportive of this premier model of a partnership between this remarkable National Volunteer Corps for Lifelong Learning and the JFLL.

Ladies and gentlemen, once again a warm welcome to one and all.

Thank you
